Dr. Abhishek Goyal

Dr. Abhishek Goyal is a Pulmonologist who trained in Pulmonary Medicine at PGIMER, Chandigarh. He is one of a small number of doctors in India with a DM in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. After leaving PGIMER, Chandigarh, he also received training in various areas of pulmonary medicine from the USA (sleep medicine), Belgium (lung transplantation and PAH), Austria (lung transplantation), and Switzerland (sleep medicine).

He joined AIIMS, Bhopal in June 2013 as an Assistant Professor and established the Department of Pulmonary Medicine. Over 11 years, as a consultant at AIIMS, Bhopal, he managed a 16-bed pulmonary general ward, a 10-bed respiratory ICU, a 4-bed sleep lab, an interventional pulmonology service, and a lung cancer programme. This was one of the busiest pulmonology departments in central India.

Dr. Goyal also started a DM programme (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) at AIIMS, Bhopal and mentored more than ten DM students. His area of research is sleep apnoea. He established India’s largest sleep lab at AIIMS, Bhopal and started India’s first PDCC course in sleep medicine.

Dr. Goyal has more than 80 publications on PubMed, with over 35 focusing on sleep medicine. He is one of the leading researchers in sleep medicine in India. His significant research achievements include conducting the world’s largest sleep epidemiological study and designing the Sleep Apnoea Screening Questionnaire (SONA).

Before joining GEIMS as Professor and Head of Respiratory Medicine, Dr. Goyal was working as an Additional Professor and Head of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at AIIMS, Bhopal. His goal is to build another advanced Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine department at GEIMS.
